MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. When used in conjunction with images of the original arcade game's ROM and disk data, MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more modern general-purpose computer.
MAME can currently emulate several thousand different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern era. REDDIT'S ARCADE COMMUNITY. a multireddit for retro gaming!.

These RULES are NOT up for discussion. Offenders MAY be banned!! Since my last post, I've come across a few more things that I have questions about.
What are 'sets', 'clones', and 'bootlegs'?. When a ROM audit returns 'NEEDS REDUMP,' what does that mean, exactly?
Should I be concerned?. When ROMs (even ones in the same 'family', so to speak) are 'Not Working,' is the cause normally due to emulation problems, or the ROM dumps?. One of the most common issues I see with 'Working' ROMs is 'Lacks sound.'
What's the deal with that? Are they bad ROM dumps, or is it simply an issue with emulating the audio chip?. Are there people working on all the ROMs all the time (to increase compatibility with MAME?).
Why are most year 2000+ ROMs unsupported/'Not Working'?. What are the functional differences between MAME and MESS. In other words, why choose one over the other. Texture resampling? Some games just look really fuzzy and unreadable on my 19' CRT.
Which is a bit confusing, considering most arcade games I played IRL were on slightly bigger screens than this. It's been a while. SIDE QUESTION: What is a '?
This can be seen when loading San Francisco Rush 2049: Special Edition (sf2049se.) Searching Google for the text 'Real time clock stopped. Check SNAP HAT' (quotes included) returned 0 results. Indeed, the status for the ROM says 'Game lacks sound,' but I'm hoping this gives a clue as to some potential fixes? I don't know.
1) Imagine there's 3 versions of a Game. Street Fighter 2 (Japan) (1992), and Street fighter 2 (USA) (1993) Both of those games are almost exactly the same game. They're considered a set. Usually one of them is the oldest. In this instance the 1993 one.
The 1992 version is considered a clone of the 1993 one, since it's younger. Both are proper legitimate games. Imagine someone made a copy of that game, and changed the title to 'SUPER SPECIAL STREET FIGHTER II'. Because it was never released by the manufacturer, it's considered a bootleg. 2) Someone figured out a specific chip in a set is bad. And so, since it's bad, it 'Needs a redump' ie copy the contents of the rom chip into a binary file. (or someone suspects it's bad, for whatever reason, and wants it to be redumped) 3) Either.
Usually if it's a bad dump, then it's the rom's fault. If its good dumps, the emulation is incomplete.
I think you're a tad confused about what emulation does. It emulates the arcade board, by running computer code to. This allows you to plug in a game program (usually stored on a ROM chip) designed for that board. But, the board will consist of many specialists chips or sections. A video section, a sound section, a protection section etc etc. Usually when something isn't working, it's a problem with one of the sections. 4) you're not seeing issues with working 'roms' you're seeing issues with the state of the emulation driver.
AKA, this emulation, of this arcade board, has no section written yet to produce sound. 5) No people work on whatever interests them.
6) Complicated systems, and most modern PC's wouldn't be powerful enough to run them accurately anyway, so not many people are interested in getting the driver working. 7) Mame emulates arcade boards. You plug in the roms, the arcade machine runs the game (rom). Mess emulates things like the commodore 64, sega megadrive etc. You plug in a game rom, or a tape or disk dump, and it emulates a home console or computer. 8) Almost no mame games do texture resampling. I presume you mean something like the Mame option D3D bilinear sampling is turned on.
Making the game appear blurry.
